Maria HUBBARD 1860 - ?

Maria Hubbard, born at Tunnel Terrace, Newport, Monmouthshire on 3rd February 1860. Her father was George Hubbard a Station Master, born in 1833 at Wallingford, Berkshire

Her mother was Christiania Evans, born in Newport on 27th December 1835 to Thomas Evans and Maria Williams.

She first lived at Tunnel Terrace, Newport Monmouthshire (Gwent), George was a railway clerk at this time.

During the 1861 census Maria was at 2 Blewitt Street with George  and Christiania, and her brother, Octavius Evans, a shoemaker.

Around 1862, the family moved to the Railway Station, Meopham, Kent, where George became the station master. She lived there for around nine years before George was posted to London and lived at 17 Blucher Road Camberwell.

In the 1871 census Maria was staying at her aunt's home at 7 Albert Villas, Fulham Road, Chelsea {RG10/71 13}. Her aunt, Elizabeth Evans, was Christiania's sister who had married Thomas Allen.

In the 1881 census Maria was described as a Telegraphist. The Hubbard family were living at 12 Blucher Road Camberwell.

Maria married "Practical Engineer" James Fitzherbert Tylden Pattenson on the 3rd November 1882 at Lambeth Register Office. James was the son of Kent J.P. William Hodges Tylden Pattenson (born 1822, married Sep 1854, Died Jun 1894) and Elizabeth Matilda Boys. James was born in 1860 and lived at Millfield, Peterborough at the time. Maria was living at Rochester Lodge, Brixton Ride.

James & Maria set up home together in Peterborough and had had five sons and two daughters:

  1. William Herbert, born in Peterborough in Dec 1883 {3b 244}.

  2. Dorothy Monica Tylden, born in Peterborough in 1884, Married Gerald Edward F Phelips (son of Captain, of the 60th Rifles, William Douglas Phelps) at All Saints Church, Peterborough on 22nd January 1908.

  3. Claud Walter Tylden, born in Peterborough in Dec 1886 {3b 223}.

  4. Arthur Eric Tylden, born in Peterborough in Dec 1888 {3b 240}. Emigrated to Poona and married Dorothy McIver in 1914. Had three daughters and one son, the eldest was Pamela Margery Tylden Pattenson (1915-1984)

  5. Percy Reginald Tylden, born in Peterborough in Sep 1891 {3b 233}.

  6. Ethelind Minnie Tylden, born in Peterborough in Sep 1892 {3b 360}. Married Algernon Knight Lofts in Dec 1915 Peterborough {3b 769}. Two sons; Michael Henry born; Dec 1916 {St G h Sq 1a 593} & Keith T born; Mar 1918 Canterbury {2a 1375}. Michael was a Major in the 2nd Bn. The Bedfordshire and Hertfordshire Regt; married Alma Grenfell-Dexter in Jun 1942 {Westminster 1a 856}; killed 11th November 1943 at Monte Cassino.

  7. Basil Lesley Tylden, born in Peterborough in Sep 1894 {3b 225}.

James lived on his own means. In 1891 they were living at 20 Cromwell Road, Peterborough, but by 1901 they had moved to 12 Mince Gardens.
